The Center for Public Life

History

In 1999, through the grassroots efforts of Beulah residents, leaders, board and staff, the “Beulah Clerical/Computer Literacy Training Program" was created at the Morris Heights Beulah Community Room with only three computers two type writers and a vision. It was located at the current main office at 94 Brandt Place.

By 2005, the program was expanded through collaboration with the Enterprise Foundation, resident leaders, former students, and other individual donors. Through this effort the Beulah/Heiskell Enterprise Center was built as a State of the Art Technology Center with 28 computers stations and 14 computers equipped with the latest technology of its time. The dual level facility featured handicap accessibility. During this time the Center offered clerical training, after school programs and job training for SEYP participants led by Sandy Deacon.

Then, during Beulah revitalization period the Mustard Seed was born. Mustard Seed began as a tutoring program designed to help students meet and exceed benchmark reading goals and skills. Today, the Mustard Seed has shown through research, dedication and consistency, education and literacy that students can indeed meet and exceed benchmarks in reading. Students who consistently attended the program through duration met these goals. The driving force behind the dedication is the understanding of the research based fact that education is a deterrent for crime and significantly reduces poverty through self-help.
